Colonial Revival House Plan 86331 presents us with a portico entrance that is topped with a balcony and supported by stately columns of the Ionic order. A cupola and two small dormer windows add visual interest to the modern metal roof. Multi-paned windows and fanlight over the front door recall the look of southern antebellum mansions.

As you can see on the floor plan, the drawings call for a Georgian style double staircase leading to the portico. According to an old tale of the South, if a gentleman followed a lady up the stairs and saw her ankles, he would then be obligated to marry her. To avoid this risk, the man would walk up the left side of the stairs, and the lady would walk up on the right. In addition, a gentleman might walk in the fields and track mud on the steps, and the separate staircase saved the lady from dragging the hem of her long skirt through his muddy boot prints.

The ceiling in this elegant foyer is open to above, and the staircase descends with a gentle curve and classic curtail. Iron spindles and the dark wooden handrail and volute really enhance your first impression in this home. Outlining the surrounding rooms are majestic columns which match the exterior.
