Colonial Revival Style House Plan

7081RMP00Colonial Revival House Plan 86331 presents us with a portico entrance that is topped with a balcony and supported by stately columns of the Ionic order. A cupola and two small dormer windows add visual interest to the modern metal roof. Multi-paned windows and fanlight over the front door recall the look of southern antebellum mansions.

As you can see on the floor plan, the drawings call for a Georgian style double staircase leading to the portico. According to an old tale of the South, if a gentleman followed a lady up the stairs and saw her ankles, he would then be obligated to marry her. To avoid this risk, the man would walk up the left side of the stairs, and the lady would walk up on the right. In addition, a gentleman might walk in the fields and track mud on the steps, and the separate staircase saved the lady from dragging the hem of her long skirt through his muddy boot prints.

The ceiling in this elegant foyer is open to above, and the staircase descends with a gentle curve and classic curtail. Iron spindles and the dark wooden handrail and volute really enhance your first impression in this home. Outlining the surrounding rooms are majestic columns which match the exterior. Looking across the expansive living room, we appreciate the set of three French doors and the ocular clerestory windows above. Outside is a terrace covered with a romantic trellis to encourage your enjoyment of the outdoors.

86331-p2Before central heating and air, the family would gather in the keeping room around the fireplace. From here, we admire a look into the country kitchen with its off white cabinets, marble topped island and exposed ceiling beams. Over the oven and cooktop is a mantle, recalling the days of cooking meals over an open fire.

Opulence greets you in the library with a wood paneled wall, built in bookcases and a golden chandelier. A leather chair and ottoman sit beside the hand carved Adam style fireplace. Across the hall, we have the master suite with three separate walk in closets and a whirlpool tub for relaxing after a long day.

At the top of the staircase is a lounge area that looks down into the living room. The future recreation room may become a billiards room or theatre. Each bedroom has a walk in closet and full bathroom, and a second laundry room is also included on this floor for convenience.
