Q:I called and requested a side elevation for this plan. Also had some follow up. I am trying to understand from the pictures what the roof plan looks like. It is very confusing. Can you see if the designer can also provide a roof plan. The roof seems very complicated. The turret by the front entrance seems to hide what is going on with that area of the roof. I am uncomfortable not knowing what it looks like behind the turret. Before I would spend the money for the plan I would need to fully understand what the house and roof look like. Also, from the picture of the back of the house it is clear that the second floor juts out the back further that the first floor. This also adds to the confusion of the roof lines. Please see if the designer would provide the additional information.
A:The nature of any Victorian styled plan with turrets creates a roof that is more complex than a standard gable or hip roof. The turret must be higher than the main roof to retain the integrity of the Victorian style. The area behind the turret is typically referred to as a “cricket” – a small reverse gable roof that is designed to shed the water to either side of the turret, without being seen from the street. The second floor cantilever does not complicate the roof. Is this roof more complicated than a standard gable roof? Absolutely, but that is the nature of this style; however, the fact that over a thousand of these have been built coast to coast attests to it’s buildability. The roof plan, and cross-sections showing how to build the roof are well spelled out in the construction drawings.
