A: The nature of any Victorian styled plan with turrets creates a roof that is more complex than a standard gable or hip roof. The turret must be higher than the main roof to retain the integrity of the Victorian style. The area behind the turret is typically referred to as a “cricket” – a small reverse gable roof that is designed to shed the water to either side of the turret, without being seen from the street. The second floor cantilever does not complicate the roof. Is this roof more complicated than a standard gable roof? Absolutely, but that is the nature of this style; however, the fact that over a thousand of these have been built coast to coast attests to it’s buildability. The roof plan, and cross-sections showing how to build the roof are well spelled out in the construction drawings.
