Your loved one will enjoy the privacy of their own home, yet the home can be located on your property. In that case, you will be close enough to lend a hand or care for your family member if needed on a full time basis. 

Handicap Friendly Home Plan Designed for Easy Maneuverability

Handicap Friendly Home Plan 83542 cuts the unnecessary things in home design and simplifies your routine. Firstly, the simple footprint and basic rooflines of this home are "cut and dried" to make construction affordable and efficient. You want comfort and you want it fast, correct? No problem with this new plan because the materials are readily available. For example, pick up the vertical wooden siding at your local building supply company, and it will most likely be in stock. No wait time! The same will probably go for the windows and metal roofing. Not only will these materials be readily available in most places, but these in-stock items will be easy to replace when the time comes to do maintenance. Overall, we recommend choosing materials like Hardiplank for siding and metal for the roof because those materials will have a long lifespan and cut down on your maintenance. 

Secondly, the floor plan is designed to eliminate the obstacles that you would find in the average home. For example, have your front walkway poured so that it creates a gentle grade for your wheelchair. Immediately you will arrive at the front door, and you are sheltered from the sun and rain on the front porch. Going inside, there is a convenient entry space with a bench and hooks where you can leave bags and shoes. Next, we have a wide threshold leading into the open living space. There are no unnecessary walls separating the kitchen or dining room or living room. Instead, you have unobstructed access to every inch of the kitchen. From there, use your creativity to design furniture placement and dining space. The ceiling slopes up to make the space feel even larger, and windows on three sides make this room bright and sunny. 

Utilize Pocket Doors for Accessibility

Thirdly, wide doorways and pocket doors are functional for opening up the space or protecting your privacy. Review the plans carefully to make sure that each entrance is constructed to maximize your personal needs for accessibility.  It's easy to open and close the pocket door which separates the bedroom side of the house from the entertaining space. Everything you need for function is readily at hand such as the mechanical room and closet space to the left side. Move freely in this area because you don't have to navigate into a tight closet to access your clothing. The bathroom is on the right side of this space, and it includes your stacked washer and dryer. Some will choose a newer model for washing clothes such as the combined washer and dryer units to save space. Those units would also be easier to use for someone who is in a wheelchair. 

Doors are vital in a home, but we love the use of pocket doors because they can be rolled back and kept out of your way. As you note in the bathroom, it includes a shower which can be designed easily with no curb. Linen storage space is available next to the sink so that you won't need to go searching for towels at inconvenient times. Lastly in this wonderful plan, we have a very spacious bedroom with a sloped ceiling and abundant windows. The room measures 11 feet wide by 15 feet deep, leaving plenty of room to move around the bed.

Exterior Elevations
In addition to the front exterior, your drawing set will include drawings of the rear and sides of your house as well. These drawings give notes on exterior materials and finishes. Particular attention is given to cornice detail, brick and stone accents, or other finish items that make your home unique.

Foundation Plan
The foundation page dimensions, concrete walls, footings, pads, posts, beams, bearing walls, and any stepped foundation information along with any retaining wall info (schematic only). A typical wall section for the home is also usually included on this page (if not, it is elsewhere in your plan set, as space allows). If your plan features a poured concrete slab rather than a basement or crawlspace, the foundation page shows footings and details for the slab, and includes plumbing locations.

Floor Plan(s)
Exterior and interior wall framing, and windows/doors are dimensioned. Room sizes are indicated and any beams, posts and structural bearing points are called out. The floorplans include an electrical legend, and electrical fittings, lights and outlets are shown. Floor Plans will also indicate cross–section details (provided on the sections page) and show any special framing details applicable to the design. Cabinet elevations are included for kitchen and bathrooms; some designs feature cabinet elevations for design–related built–ins too.

Building Sections
Building sections show changes in floor, ceiling, or roof height, and the relationship of one level to another. Our section pages also show how the stairs are calculated (if there are some) and depict roof and foundation members. We try and draw sections to show the most useful information — choosing locations where there are elements you or your contractor might need clarification on.

Roof Plan
Roof framing or truss directions are shown, slope directions are indicated and structural members are sized and called out if applicable. The gravity loads used to calculate the rafters, beams and posts are indicated , and we also show gutters, downspouts, and any roof venting required for your home.

Your home comes detailed to meet the requirements of the latest adopted version of the ‘International Residential Code’, and our notes and details pages outline all the elements applicable to the design of your home. Compliance with further standards may need to be incorporated into your plan set, depending on the requirements of your building department — these are usually done locally.
