I can’t think of any better place to spend Thanksgiving Day than a log house, surrounded by mounds of fresh snow with icicles hanging from the eaves. This week a customer called about log house plan 87054. When I called the designer with questions about the plan, he said, “Hold on for a minute, I’m going through the snow to get the plans.” I laughed, thinking that he was joking like a grandfather who tells you, “I had to walk ten miles to school through the snow, both ways!” I was shocked when I heard the unmistakable crunch of snow as he made his way to what must be a detached office space! This shouldn’t surprise me because the designer is located in Washington.

Suddenly, I caught myself wishing that I was the client, preparing to build this cozy log house! By this time next year, he will stomp his snow covered boots on the front porch, march through the front door and almost fall over when family members wrap him in a bear hug of welcome after a long day at work. Can you imagine the Thanksgiving holiday decorations around the great room- colorful pumpkins on the staircase and the aroma of turkey and pumpkin pie wafting in from the kitchen?

A log home is irresistible to extended family during the holidays, and this plan has you covered with a guest suite over the garage. A small kitchen, full bathroom and guest bedroom can comfortably accommodate a couple. Add a few bunks in the living area for children as well. Upstairs in the main house are the two smaller bedrooms, and a loft overlooks the living room downstairs. With this open arrangement, the kids upstairs will know dinner is on the table before they are called to join the festivities.
